Mr Redman said the project would employ creative engineering solutions to improve water quality and create permanent and accessible water bodies for the enjoyment of local communities and tourists. "Investment in these lakes will re-establish native flora and fauna, attract visitors and deliver economic returns to the communities," he said. "Lake Yealering in the Wheatbelt and Lake Ewlyamartup in the Great Southern are both integral to their communities. "This investment, through the Royalties for Regions Living Lakes initiative, will increase opportunities for bird watching, boating, swimming and water-skiing. "This revitalisation will boost visitation to these lakes, helping to bring tourism dollars to surrounding communities as well as providing environmental and social benefits." Engineering improvements to both lakes are aimed at increasing the average number of days each year with water depth greater than 1.5 metres, as well as significantly improving the quality of the water. The Living Lakes initiative will complement the improvements made by the local communities to the amenity of the lakes. Fact File

Located near Midland train station, the Woodbridge project will address the high demand for more housing choice and diversity in the growing area. Housing Minister Brendon Grylls said the five-storey development, to be built by Psaros, was exciting news for people looking to buy their own home on the doorstep of the vibrant Midland town centre. "This infill development is close to a range of new amenities, employment opportunities and transport links, and is a short walk from the new Midland hospital and the proposed Curtin Medical School," Mr Grylls said. The Woodbridge development will offer a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and is expected to take 18 months to complete, with initial earthworks expected to start in 2017. The development embraces the State Government's Affordable Housing Strategy and infill housing targets, with a focus on high-quality, affordable, medium to higher density housing developments in areas where these options are not readily available. The Housing Authority acquired the land from the MRA for $1.36 million. Planning Minister Donna Faragher said facilitating the delivery of affordable housing was vital in planning for the future growth of Midland. "It is essential the range of affordable accommodation options made available to the community grow alongside the new amenities and services being provided in Midland," Mrs Faragher said. "This development will complement the range of projects underway." Pre-sales are expected to commence in early 2017. Fact File

Almost 30 Western Australian small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) will attend one-on-one meetings today and tomorrow, where they will showcase their products and capabilities to two design proponents - Rheinmetall Defence Australia and BAE Systems Australia. The local businesses specialise in a range of products and services including niche engineering, electrical and mechanical systems, laser survey technology, anti-corrosion and galvanising, fire and rescue equipment, and vehicle simulators. Commerce Minister Michael Mischin said the Liberal National Government was partnering with the Australian Government to arrange the meetings with the two major defence contractors. Mr Mischin said the LAND 400 program would deliver about 1,100 next generation armoured fighting vehicles to replace the Force's dated fleet used extensively in Afghanistan. "Rheinmetall's Boxer CRV and BAE's AMV35 are currently undertaking battlefield testing as the companies compete to be selected late next year as the final proponent for the build project," he said. "Both companies have made a commitment to maximise the number of local WA businesses taking part in the project if they are the chosen proponent." The Minister said the WA industry had proven it was well-positioned to enter the supply chain for major defence projects and the next generation of armoured fighting vehicles was no exception. "There is a potential for WA companies with specialised product and capability to have significant opportunities to participate in this important build program," he said. "The Liberal National Government is supporting WA businesses to secure defence industry work and is committed to further growing the industry and securing local jobs for decades to come." Fact File

Premier Colin Barnett and Transport Minister Bill Marmion today officially opened the latest upgrade to Gnangara Road - an eight kilometre, four-lane carriageway - managed by the City of Swan. "Gnangara Road is one of Perth's busiest roads with more than 25,000 vehicles travelling along it every day," the Premier said. "The City of Swan asked the State Government to address its most important road upgrade project. We said we would and we have now delivered on that commitment. "The volume of traffic using this route far exceeds the capacity of a single-lane carriageway. Through this project, the Liberal National Government has addressed growing congestion and safety, and ensured the future needs of Perth's growing population can be met." Mr Marmion said Gnangara Road was a vital link in Perth's transport network - linking Ocean Reef Road in Perth's northern suburbs to Henley Brook in the east. "Work on this road upgrade started in 2012 and has been completed in stages by the City of Swan," the Minister said. "The last stage has created up to 150 jobs for local people, and is expected to be open to road users in the next couple of weeks." Mr Marmion said the final stage of the project had included the installation of new traffic signals at the intersection of Gnangara Road and Beechboro Road North, which was a recognised Black Spot. "This has been a dangerous stretch of road for many years and its completion will mean it will now be safer for road users, who can expect a reduction in their journey times as a result of improved traffic flow," he said. The Premier said the Government was now focused on its next major road project in the region - NorthLink WA - which would be completed by mid-2019. "The project will provide a vital, state-of-the-art transport link between Morley and Muchea. It will also reduce travel times, congestion and provide significant productivity benefits to the economy, industry, motorists and the local community," he said. Fact File

Premier and Tourism Minister Colin Barnett said the Margaret River Gourmet Escape was highly successful in promoting both the region and the State as a premium food and wine destination "The Margaret River Gourmet Escape has grown into one of the world's best food and wine festivals since it began in 2012," Mr Barnett said. "It has also fast become an important economic driver for the region. "The 2015 festival recorded an attendance of more than 18,000 and injected more than $7.8 million into the local economy." The Premier said the festival had become a powerful brand in the culinary world, lifting Margaret River and WA's profile as a premium food and wine destination. "West Australians know that the Margaret River region is one of the best places to visit for world-class wines, fresh produce, pristine beaches and beautiful forests, and we are telling the world through this spectacular festival," Mr Barnett said. "We are also seeing great benefits for WA producers with products making it onto the menus and wine lists of the world's best restaurants." Earlier this week, the Premier welcomed British television cooking superstar Nigella Lawson - the headline guest at this year's festival - to Western Australia and presented her with a basket of fresh WA produce. The Margaret River Gourmet Escape is supported by the Liberal National Government through Tourism Western Australia's Regional Events Program, made possible by Royalties for Regions. Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said he was pleased to see Royalties for Regions investing in the Regional Events Program to bring significant economic, social and cultural benefits to regional communities. "Supporting events and tourism will help to grow regional areas into thriving and sustainable communities," Mr Redman said. "Events like the Margaret River Gourmet Escape enhance the vibrancy in regional areas, making them exciting places to visit as well as great places to live." The Premier said tourism was a vital industry for regional Western Australia. "In 2015-16, visitors spent $9.6 billion in the State, including $4.5 billion in regional WA," Mr Barnett said. "We have a strategy to increase the value of tourism to $12 billion by 2020 and supporting regional events such as this will help us achieve this." Fact File

Health Minister John Day said the positive feedback came from a survey of users of the high-definition telehealth services linking country outpatients to clinicians in the State's major hospitals and health services. "There is no doubt this Liberal National Government initiative is dramatically improving the lives of many regional residents," Mr Day said. "More than 15,000 people have used telehealth outpatient appointments in the past year and the service continues to grow as people discover how convenient and efficient it is. "Country people carry a significant burden when they have to travel to major centres to attend outpatient appointments." Almost all patients said the service was as effective as a 'face to face' appointment. Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said that he was pleased to see the impact the Royalties for Regions investment was having on health care in regional communities. "The State Government is making significant investments in the telehealth expansion through the Royalties for Regions program," Mr Redman said. "A total of $31 million in the south, as part of the $500 million Southern Inland Health Initiative, and in the north, telehealth forms an essential component of the $194.1 million North West Health Initiative. "The response that 99 per cent of those surveyed would recommend the telehealth service is a clear indication of the success of this investment." Fact File
