Perth to host Australia’s biggest sporting event
Friday, 15 July 2016
Premier and Tourism Minister Colin Barnett today announced the Liberal National Government, through Tourism Western Australia, had won the rights to host the second game of the series at the new stadium. "Holding a State of Origin match at our magnificent stadium is a huge coup for WA," he said. "Arguably, Australia's biggest sporting rivalry is the Rugby League State of Origin series between the New South Wales Blues and the Queensland Maroons. "We are expecting thousands of fans to make the trip west to be at the game and millions more will watch the live television broadcast, which gives us the opportunity to show off our transforming city and world-class new stadium to the rest of Australia." The Premier said State of Origin matches were the most watched sporting events on Australian television, drawing an audience of 3.96 million viewers last year, out-rating popular events such as the AFL Grand Final (3.54 million viewers) and the Melbourne Cup (3.07 million viewers). "The 2019 match will be only the tenth time in State of Origin history that part of the series has been played outside New South Wales or Queensland," he said. "Having Perth Stadium means WA can now host some of the biggest sporting events in the world, which will have an incredible flow-on effect for the State's economy. "For rectangular events such as this, high-quality seats close to the action will be added as part of the customisation of the venue and this will increase the capacity from 60,000 to 65,000 seats. "In a break from tradition, the Perth match will be played on a weekend instead of a Wednesday evening. This will give fans travelling from interstate the chance to spend the weekend in Perth, which will be a massive boost for the economy." When the second State of Origin game was held in Melbourne last year, more than 39,000 people travelled from out of state to watch it. If 20,000 visitors travelled to Perth to watch the 2019 game, it would be worth $15 million to the Western Australian economy. Mr Barnett said events at the new Perth Stadium formed a crucial part of the State Government's strategy to grow the State's tourism industry. The Premier acknowledged Venueswest and VenuesLive - the recently named operator of Perth Stadium - as important partners in the deal with State of Origin. "In the year ending March 2016, visitors to WA spent $9.3 billion during their stay in the State and we want to see that figure grow to $12 billion by 2020," he said. "Events will help us reach that goal which is why in the recent State Budget, we committed $30 million towards bringing business, sporting and entertainment events to WA, including a $19 million investment to activate Perth Stadium." Hi Gardeners,
We're having our usual weekly casual Garden Gathering this Saturday from 1pm to 3pm (I hope the weather improves!), but next weekend, Saturday 23 July, we are calling for all friends and supporters to come and join us in a bit of a working celebration - we're getting 10 new big garden beds installed! We will gather in the garden to line the beds and fill them up with great soil. There's also some work filling the pathways with wood chips, if you're up to it. If you are prepared to accept this challenge then we'd love to see you and your weapons of mass construction:
Once the beds are in and filled, we're having automated, water-wise irrigation installed, all in time for Spring and Summer. Worth celebrating! It's been a big push to get to this point and I want to acknowledge all our sponsors and suppliers on this 'little' project, who are making it all possible: Manjimup Men's Shed Manjimup Pump and Electrical Manjimup Newsagency Manjimup Stockfeeds Complete Botanics Manjimup Farmers Market Shire of Manjimup Department of Local Government and Communities And the volunteers of the Manjimup Community Garden Please invite your friends and family for the celebratory filling of the garden beds. See you in the garden, Local Community Service Organisation urgently needs volunteers to support the transportation of clients to medical appointments in Bunbury, also to deliver Meals on Wheels to housebound community members.

Seniors and Volunteering Minister Tony Simpson said funding of up to $1,000 was available for community organisations and local governments to organise events that recognised the contributions of Western Australian volunteers. "West Australians have a great tradition of volunteering and its value to our State is enormous, estimated at about $39 billion per year in economic, social and cultural value," Mr Simpson said. "The many hours volunteers dedicate to supporting organisations across WA have an immeasurable positive impact for volunteers, their communities and the organisations they help. "The Thank a Volunteer Day Celebration Grants program will enable local communities to acknowledge and celebrate the role of volunteers in their communities." Research commissioned by Volunteering WA in 2015 found that if treated as a sector in its own right, volunteering is WA's largest industry by employment. The Minister said the State Government was committed to supporting volunteers, providing almost $1.3 million in recurrent funding. "This includes more than $650,000 to promote the value of volunteering and $640,000 to Volunteering WA as the peak body to support the sustainability and effectiveness of volunteering," he said. Ms Mitchell said the Liberal National Government had allocated $720,000 over three years to Anglicare to support children and youth aged six to 18 who had lost a significant person in their life to suicide. "This service is the first of its kind in Australia and is based on extensive research into the mental and emotional development and experience of children and young people," she said. "We know children and young people grieve differently from adults and they revisit their grief as they experience developmental milestones. "Statistics show a child or young person who loses a parent to suicide is three times more likely to take their own life, so it is vital they are able to access appropriate care, non-judgemental support and help." Because of the sensitive and unique nature of the service, the program will operate only in metropolitan Perth for three years to ensure the model is effective and appropriate. "Evidence shows that group-based support is the most effective for these children and young people, and the service will provide regular workshops in small groups by specialists in child development and grief counselling," the Minister said. "A complementary counselling service for parents and guardians will enable them to be better equipped to support the child or young person with their bereavement." Fact File
