Local furniture designers showcase WA timbers

  • WA's sustainably managed native hardwoods showcased over the weekend at Furnitex & Design 2016 in Brisbane
  • Local furniture makers win awards at showcase 
Forestry Minister Mia Davies has congratulated Western Australian companies and designers for winning a number of coveted awards at the Australian Furniture Industry Awards and Australian Contemporary Emerging Design Awards in Brisbane on Sunday night.

Local furniture designers, crafters and manufacturers partnered with the Forest Products Commission (FPC) to showcase WA's sustainably managed native hardwoods at the nation's largest furniture and furnishing exhibition, Furnitex & Design 2016.

"Furnitex is the perfect event to present the beauty, strength and versatility of the State's unique hardwoods to national and international buyers," Ms Davies said.

"It also provides a marketing platform for emerging native timber furniture designers, manufacturers and timber suppliers.

"I congratulate the local talent who participated in the exhibition and all the Western Australian winners."

The Western Australian companies which won awards were:
  • Auswest Timbers - Australian Furniture Association Supplier of the Year award
  • Quedos Billiard Tables - Timber Medallion award sponsored by WoodSolutions
  • Tamara Glick - Creative Vision Student award for her moulded karri plywood and industrial metal loop chair
  • Kianoosh Kavoosi - Creative Vision award for her Charles table

  • FPC's participation in Furnitex & Design 2016 supports WA furniture designers and crafters
  • The commission's exhibition space titled Western Australian Hardwoods - natural renewable solutions showcased unique WA designed high-end furniture items in native timbers including jarrah, karri, marri and WA sheoak
  • Furnitex & Design 2016 was held this year at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on July 8-10
