In Boulder today, Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies announced the start of Kort Sportz and Night Fields - local youth basketball and football programs. "Both these projects, which are being run at night, offer local youth a place to play sport and gain lifestyle and leadership skills," Ms Davies said. "The programs use sport and recreation to help increase the number of organised activities for young people out of school hours in Kalgoorlie-Boulder." The Minister said Kort Sportz was for children aged eight to 18 and the footy Night Fields program was for 12 to 17-year-olds. "Boys and girls wanting to play these sports are welcome to join but anyone who would like to volunteer or gain skills as an official are also encouraged to show up," she said. "These programs can lead to pathways into sporting clubs as a player, coach or official and flow into the areas of education, employment and training." Kort Sportz is run on Saturday nights at Maku Stadium and Night Fields is at Digger Daws Oval on Thursdays. The programs have been made possible through a $30,000 grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation as part of their commitment to youth engagement across Western Australia. Those interested in participating can attend any session or contact the Hope Community Services Kalgoorlie office on 9021 3069. Fact File
